Spectacular mid-century inspired residence

This gorgeous property is a 5,000 square foot glass, steel redwood and stone modern house set in the foothills of La Cañada, California, designed by Jamie Bush & Co. who worked with the firm Osborn Architects on the house. The residence was based on its mid-century predecessor which was in poor condition and fell apart over time. The owners loved the original house so much that they spent six years creating homage to the original but with major aesthetic and technological improvements. The owners are a middle aged couple with two high school aged boys and they wanted a house that expressed a warm eclectic modernism. One that was rich yet unfussy weighed of the earth yet playful and surprising.

Jamie Bush & Co. designed all the interior architecture (design and specifications of the kitchen, bathrooms, casework, material and color palette selections, etc.) as well as the all of the furnishings though out. The main focus was to create a house that was built from the outside in, which is to say that the material selections, color palette and configuration of the planes of the house and detailing were chosen to work on the exterior first and then pulled inside the house. This was done in order to blur the interior and exterior spaces in true California fashion. Slate flooring extends to the front and rear patios, redwood siding runs continuously on all vertical surfaces inside and out, painted steel structure and white ceilings all take part in this endeavor.

The furnishings and lighting are a mix of custom designed pieces, select mid-century vintage finds, contemporary furnishings and ethnic pieces from Asia, Indonesian and Peru. The main goal with the decor of the home was to design a house that expressed a heavy hand in a highly textured natural, neutral color and materials palette so these items ‘read’ as an extension of the architecture of the house with select and strategic pops of color though out for delight and a sense of surprise.
