This light-filled, two-story modern home is the vision of John Maniscalco Architecture, located in the hilly neighborhood of Dolores Heights, San Francisco, California. The architects have completely rebuilt this home to maximize the site. The original structure was a small home constructed in the 1970’s. The new home features and open and airy layout that seamlessly connects indoor and outdoor living spaces.
At the rear of the property is a garden courtyard, completely private, with plenty of outdoor living space for relaxing and entertaining. A spiral staircase connects the ground level with the upper level and rooftop deck—which provides fantastic views over the San Francisco skyline. Walls of glass helps to visually connect the indoors and out, while also helping to illuminate interior spaces with natural light.
“Contrasting systems of vertical movement and expansive horizontal views provide a variety of spatial relationships to the site and the city—from the intimate to the distant, from urban expanse to private garden,” states the architects. “A sky-lit two-story interior stair hall with bamboo garden blurs the house-landscape relationship and provides further emphasis of the vertical connectivity.”
