Fabulous rustic mountain retreat in Lake Tahoe with decadent details

This sensational rustic mountain retreat was designed by High Camp Home in collaboration with builder High Sierra Customs, located in Truckee, just outside of Lake Tahoe, California. The home is comprised of 3,606 square feet of living space, with three bedrooms and three bathrooms plus a bunk loft above the pool table room. This custom home features a spectacular blend of materials, including custom-milled barn wood, square nails, custom ironwork, iron fixtures, and stacked stone fireplaces.

Additionally, this mountain dwelling offers breathtaking and panoramic views of Donner Lake and the surrounding mountains. The master bedroom suite will leave you speechless, including two fireplaces, a hammered copper tub, and incredible rockwork. The deck, kitchen, and complimentary living spaces are refined and sophisticated, yet comfortable and inviting. This residence was featured in the February 2009 cover of Tahoe Quarterly as the award-winning remodel of the year.

We love how the project team strived to evoke the feeling of resort living in this home by using a variety of textures, colors, and finishes. Overall, every detail is of the finest craftsmanship with beautiful custom features that make this home livable, warm, and inviting.

Above: The sofas are custom-made specifically for this project using Ralph Lauren fabric. The wall paint is custom, golden-colored plaster with ground pecan shells to give it depth and texture. At the top of the fireplace chimney is a sheet metal which was blackened and distressed by the build team. The impressive chandelier was custom-made through the design department at High Camp Home.

Above: The fireplace of this rustic mountain retreat features a solid stone. It is a combination of slate flagstone, slab, and stacked stone, incorporating reclaimed timbers and a sheet metal two-sided fireplace insert. It’s a tremendous focal point in the room as well as a great heat source.

Above: The counter material is black honed granite. For added interest, a custom hand-forged ornate iron trim with copper rivets were added as a cap around the edge of the counters. The metal work was done by a Local blacksmith artisan in Tahoe, California. The flooring is random pattern flagstone slate.

Above: The ceiling is resawn old growth pine in watco medium walnut stain.

Above: The counter is Hot Rolled Steel with Decorative Hand Forged Steel Trim with Copper Rivets. The wood used for the cabinetry is Dead Standing Pine which is reclaimed-resawn. On the wood is a Watco Medium Walnut stain.

Above: A thick/heavy gauge galvanized wire mesh was used in this window to accent the area and really make it pop.

Above: In the kitchen, the upper counter is copper, while the lower counter material is black honed granite.

Above: Tin was used behind the shelves for a rustic, natural look. The light fixture over the dining table is a custom design by High Camp Home.

Above: In the powder bathroom, the bark shingles are real poplar bark, which is flattened, cleaned, and sanitized. They can be used for exterior or interior use. They have great acoustic properties, so they work well in Media Rooms, Mancaves, Wine Rooms, etc. To find this material, try Bark House. The light fixture is a woven copper pendants- available in custom sizes through High Camp Home. The sink is by Gravity Glas, one similar can be currently found on eBay. The countertop is a piece of Sierra Antique Slate in a large slab that was cut for the counter top.

Above: The bathtub is a copper soaking tub from Diamond Spas. There is a tub filler made by Price Pfister that is very similar to the one shown here. The flooring is Flagstone Slate in random pattern. The throw is from Silverado Home.

Above: The vanity was custom designed and made for this project using cracked edge travertine as the counter surface and the reason for using pine as the wood source. The backsplash is a riveted copper. The paint is custom, golden-colored plaster with ground pecan shells to give it depth and texture.

Above: The flooring is Sierra Antique Random Slate, while the stone on the walls is The stone on the walls is solid stone. Its a combination of slate flagstone, slab, and stacked stone. The beams are reclaimed timbers from old barns, adding to the rustic appeal by bringing the outdoors in.

Above: The backsplash is sheet metal that has been antiqued with copper rivets. The wood used for the vanity is Dead Standing Pine which is reclaimed-resawn. On the vanity is Watco Medium Walnut stain. For the door inserts – Watco Dark Walnut Stain. The countertop is travertine with a 3″ cracked edge detail.

Above: The vanity countertop is a travertine slab with a 3″ cracked edge detail. The wood used for the vanity is Dead Standing Pine which is reclaimed and re-sawn. The flooring is a custom blend of travertine, pebblestone, and barn wood planking. The wood is scribed into the stone pebble floor for a live-edge look. The tile in the shower is travertine, using 8×16 travertine tiles, offset. The paint on the walls is custom, golden-colored plaster with ground pecan shells to give it depth and texture.
