Delightful farmhouse renovation with vintage-inspired details in Spain

farmhouse-patio

This stunning traditionally styled farmhouse was renovated by decorator Gemma Mateos, located in the Alt Empordà a region in Girona, Catalonia, Spain. When renewing this home for a young family, the decorator focused on creating open spaces, unifying color and connecting them to the lush gardens, one of the jewels of this lovely home. The property has a slight slope, so the lower level has a spacious veranda in the garden.

The veranda was designed to be an outdoor living area to enjoy throughout the year, with furnishings that mesh with its traditional architecture. The porch features stone walls, wooden beams, and iron railings, creating a perfect outdoor oasis. Inside, you see comfortable furnishings, a mix of vintage and other rural and traditional pieces. Spaciousness and comfort were the keys to success for the design of this farmhouse renovation project.

The decorator opened the kitchen to the dining area by taking down a wall and delineating spaces with an island. The island is not only used for food prep, but also for the children to sit on stools and draw or do homework, a great way for the family to interact with each other.

Two elliptical arches help to open the spaces. The hood in the kitchen was also redesigned in the Provencal style. The main living space was once a narrow room, which after tearing down a wall, a cozy seating area was created in front of the fireplace.

What We Love: Light and fresh air filter through the small windows, helping keep the atmosphere fresh and bright. The finished result is a beautifully comfortable farmhouse that is very timeless, built about 20 years ago, it appears as “a farmhouse as before”.

Tell Us: What do you think, was this farmhouse renovation a success or do you feel the design could have been further improved?

In the master bedroom, a wall was removed to connect the bathroom and dressing room. A new flat arch that has been decorated with two ancient columns adds spaciousness to a room dressed in white linen upholstery.
