Maison C is a stunning modern family home that has been designed by Lode Architecture, located about twenty kilometers from Paris, in Île-de-France, a region of France. Completed in 2010, the clients wanted for this new home a voluntary architectural approach, free from conventions, and totally bespoke. The main themes were quickly identified: continuities and discontinuities, sharing spaces and intimate spaces, distances and visual relationships between children and parents, arrival sequence and position of the garage and integration of the pool.
Revisiting the uninhibited Californian architecture houses, windows and widely adapted to the context of the larger suburbs, the project scripted the comings and goings of vehicles and staged the pool at the center of family life. Across the width of the plot, the horizontal shape of the house is organizing a garden at the front and a patio on the back. The whole house fits into the natural slope of the land to be part of the landscape. The old orchard is fully architected.
We discover the house flowing along the garden before slipping under the volume that houses the parking. A private staircase leads directly to the heart of the house. The rear of the house is built around a patio. This protected view of the surrounding houses space creates a visual game between the space of parents and children. The sequence kitchen-dining-room-pool is organized on an axis that connects the pool deck to patio. The lounge overhanging glazed and hand-else, enjoys sweeping views overlooking the garden and open views over the rooms for children.
The choice of a single storey house offers here, in the absence of compactness, the ability to guide all living areas to the south. Solar gain in the summer is controlled by advanced roofing and controlled by external sliding shutters. The pool and terrace also benefit from the most favorable exposure. Pond water is heated by the roof panels. A heat pump also provides heating and hot water in the house. The patio planted north opposite the mineral soil of the south facade accentuates the temperature difference between the two facades. This architectural feature promotes natural cooling by convection of the house without using air conditioning. Isolated from the outside house, enjoying the large inertia of the concrete slabs. If the architecture of the house incorporates these devices sustainability in design, aesthetics tends to break free, in the idea of a mature ecology: an invisible ecology.

The renovation of a private residence completed in 2014 in La Rochelle, France results in the open and luminous ‘white house’, designed by Le Studio Pierre Antoine Compain. The scheme is organized around a full-height atrium, located beneath a large roof window, which allows light to flow into each of the four floors. Glass partitions and white floors in this inner void promote illumination, while promoting an overall openness both in vertical and horizontal axes. Small pods extend into the central space to create areas scaled for individual use, including a computer station and reading nook.

To begin there is space, an empty space, sometimes attached to a past but always turned to the possibilities that the future holds. This space is precious, along with the designs that will take place within. The studio’s work consists of sculpting the void, the emptiness, and transforming it by shining light upon volumes, functions and materials. Our ambition is to create a unique spatial design that will be self-evident and recognizable. Deeply attached to the laid back identity of Southern France, The Studio is also inspired by other horizons, other cultures, from the vibrant colors of Brazil to the sleek lines of the Florida coast. Our creations reflect a taste for light, lively colors and soft forms. The studio aspires to present a global approach to the project, where design and product meet to form one. House R is a family home for a couple with three kids which has been designed by Colboc Franzen & Associés, situated in Sèvres, a Parisian suburb in France. The family had acquired a plot of land, which was, at the time, occupied by an orchard and its gardener’s shed. The small construction along with the healthy trees were preserved in memory of the past. The program was discussed and analyzed. The 3,223 square foot (299.5 square meters) house consists of three separate sets: the amenities (lobby, office, laundry room, basement, garage), the common areas (living room, dining room, kitchen and the parental suite), and finally the children’s bedrooms, arranged around a multipurpose space.
The methods and time of occupation are distinct and expectations are different: practicality for the first feature, collective life and reception area for the second and cosiness for the third. Furthermore, this fragmentation comes into resonance with the context: it is not just a house anymore but three volumes that come across the scale of heterogeneous nearby constructions. Due to the small size of the site volumes are superimposed.
The first volume is built backing on to the neighboring construction and runs parallel to the street. It’s half buried in the slope and therefore levels the ground. Made out of masonry, quenched with a single layer of bitumen and recovered with Corten steel sheets, this first floor contains all the amenities. Walls, ceiling and floor are white and contrast with the exterior. Those elements converge on the staircase and accelerate the perspective so the visitor is quickly projected into the house. The hall leads to the office and the laundry. The cloakroom and the restrooms are hidden in the thickness of the walls. Thanks to the first volume which levels the ground, the second floor is in direct relation with the garden. As far as the cantilever is concerned, it constitutes a canopy for the main entrance of the house. This floor is dedicated to the collective life. It’s a really opened and fluid space.
The second floor is divided by two “pieces of furniture”. The first piece incorporates the stairs, the kitchen, the restrooms and the chimney whereas the second one is composed of the dressing and the bathroom. Those two blocks delineate the living room, the dining room and the parental suite. It’s a very minimalist place.
All the terraces offer various points of view and different aspects depending on the season.
The third and last floor is, once again, leaning on the neighboring building. The volume is wrapped with pine lath so the house can be in the line of the predominant color shades of the district. Since the volume is on the top of the construction and dedicated to the children, the wooden cladding was also a wink to tree houses. On the third floor three bedrooms and their bathrooms are organized around a multipurpose space. This double-oriented space is protected by a screen wall on the street side, and leads to a large terrace (rooftop of the second floor) on the south side. Bedrooms are also double-oriented to optimize views and natural lightening and provide natural and efficient ventilation.
Sustainability was a main objective of the project: exterior isolation, recyclable materials with low environmental impact, high-performance glazing.

This old farmhouse in the Pyrenees Mountains, France has been decorated for the holidays in a Nordic spirit because it snows heavily in the winter. This Nordic appearance permeates every corner of the house. The owners transformed this 18th century residence in their principal home after a thorough reform. The home had no electricity or running water and being an old country house, the stables were located on the ground floor, the foundations were of great concern. It was an absolute ruin, but with the help of architects Ferran Vila Barceló and Ferran Vila Franch, the house was recovered to its former glory and modernized to be comfortable and cozy.
We knew the owner wanted to preserve as much original appearance. We take everything we could underpinning and reinforcing the old structure and recovering and recycling the damaged materials. Even small, useless to hold the deck beams were used in the ceiling of the rooms, to beautify the windows, in the bathroom mirror or for part of the furniture … A challenge! Many of the furnishings as we made our own designs, using, for example , old pieces of wood from old doors, they could no longer fulfill its original function.

Spread out on two levels, the bedrooms were located on the top — with direct access from the outside — is an open space that houses the kitchen, dining and great room opened . “The kitchen is one of the jewels of the house. We both like to cook and invite our friends. It was imperative to have a space in which many people live and be attractive, warm and effective. ” Designed by the firm Tenuee, the structure of the furniture is made of solid oak front doors and drawers were made with ancient wooden boats from the Japara area in Indonesia. ” We had a hard time finding what we wanted. We are young and we wanted to choose something casual with which to identify and to contrast without attracting much attention with the rest of the house.”
The rest of the decor is simple and rustic Nordic breathes with certain strokes. “Ceilings with exposed beams, stone walls, old wood, natural fabrics, shades of cream, pickled … We were attracted to a lot of furniture, materials and unique pieces in which the passage of time becomes apparent.” The comfortable bedroom has solid wood beamed ceilings, sweetened by fir branches, pine cones and wreaths spread out on the antique furnishings.

Villa Solaire is a converted old farmhouse into a luxury rental villa, revisiting traditional techniques in the village of Morzine, in the Rhône-Alpes region of France. The renovation was carried out by Jérémie Koempgen Architecture and FUGA, built in 1826, it was singled out by the municipality as a landmark for traditional architecture. A uniform cladding wraps the whole farm. One of the challenges of the project was to preserve its appearance, while filtering light into the heart of the 6,673 square foot (620 square meters) building. The traditional technique of decorative cut-outs within the wood strips was used to perform specific perforations within the planks. The design of this simple and contemporary pattern is consistent with the equipment and techniques used by the local carpenter for cutting spruce slats. These cut-outs recall the disjointed battens of the traditional barn, used for drying hay.
Today, these slits bring light inside the building. The glazed elements of the project, which are flush with the inside of the façade, are partially hidden by the cover strips. As they are not visible from outside they do not interfere with the uniformity of the cladding.
Throughout the year, the surrounding roofs and buildings cast their shadows on the facades. The pattern within the cladding is designed to respond to the path described by these shadows: the areas receiving a greater amount of sun are all the more open and provide a certain legibility of the continuity between the common spaces of the house.
This concept of interlocking inside/outside, evokes a lifestyle in harmony with its surroundings and leads to the project being named the “solar house”: a house exposed on its four facades to the path of the sun, perceived as a sundial.
Finding one’s bearings: A living geography
The idea is to move through this house between four “blocks” steady as rocks, located at each corner of the building. Each independent unit forms a suite with sleeping area and amenities.
Between these four blocks, the remaining space is occupied by a succession of stacked floors at different levels in the framework. This continuum of generous space welcomes the activities shared by the inhabitants: cooking, dining, watching a film, conversing in the living room, warming up around the fire…
These four blocks mark the house as the summits punctuate the valley. In Haute Savoie, one instinctively relates the farms to the mountains. Again, this symbolic association is translated in each block as it is identified in its facing mountainous terrain, just as the framework can be interpreted as a forest, whose various topographical lines are recalled within the different floor levels.
Revealing the structure:Nested scales or “the complex of the snail”
The charm of the original farm resides in the existing structure. Conserving its overall appearance was of one of the project’s key challenges, which motivated its restoration: It was fully recovered and the original plastering preserved after brushing and trimming.
In order to clear the room of the nave while meeting the rental house needs, utility functions were closely integrated. A strong contrast results from the scales of the cozy bedrooms, bathrooms and sleeping alcoves, next to the open central meeting space. The complexity of these nested spaces is combined with a similar research in terms of details and materials.
